Surgery You Do Not Need Is Not a Bargain

Orthopaedics is a field where over-treatment is easy and expensive, so it is worth saying plainly what we believe.

Most slipped discs settle without an operation. Most carpal tunnels need a splint, not surgery. Many rotator cuff tears do well with physiotherapy alone, and a frozen shoulder — which is often mistaken for a torn cuff — almost never needs operating on at all. A knee or hip is replaced when pain limits your life, not when an X-ray looks bad; X-ray appearance and symptoms frequently do not match, and we treat the patient rather than the film.

A doctor-owned hospital has no revenue target pushing you toward the theatre. When you do not need an operation, we will tell you so.

When It Is Urgent

Some orthopaedic problems will not wait, and you should know which:

A hip fracture in an older person — should be fixed or replaced within 24 to 48 hours. The danger is lying in bed, not the operation.
Cauda equina syndrome — difficulty passing urine, saddle numbness, or severe weakness in both legs. Go to an emergency department immediately.
A suspected spinal injury — do not move the person. Call an ambulance.
A cut hand with a finger that will not bend, or is numb — a divided tendon or nerve. Come in the same day.
