Snoring & Sleep Apnea Treatment in Delhi

Home / Snoring & Sleep Apnea Treatment in Delhi

Snoring ranges from a harmless social nuisance to a warning sign of obstructive sleep apnoea — a genuine medical condition that strains the heart and leaves you exhausted. The two need very different handling. At Sama Hospital — a NABH-accredited, doctor-owned hospital in South Delhi — our ENT team starts by finding out which you have, because the treatment depends entirely on that.

Snoring vs. Sleep Apnoea: A Crucial Difference

Simple snoring is noise. It disturbs a partner but does not, by itself, harm your health.

Obstructive sleep apnoea is different: the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, breathing pauses, and you wake — often without knowing it — dozens or hundreds of times a night. It raises blood pressure, strains the heart, and causes the crushing daytime tiredness that makes driving dangerous.

The warning signs of apnoea are snoring with witnessed pauses, gasping or choking in sleep, and daytime sleepiness. That combination needs proper assessment, not just a fix for the noise.

The Sleep Study Comes First

If sleep apnoea is suspected, a sleep study is the essential first step — not surgery. It confirms whether you have apnoea and how severe it is, and that completely changes what should be done. Operating on the airway of someone who actually has significant sleep apnoea, without diagnosing it first, can leave the real danger untreated while quietening the snore.

We will not recommend snoring surgery without knowing what we are treating.

Treatment: Surgery Is Rarely the First Step

For moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea, CPAP — a mask that gently holds the airway open at night — is the most effective treatment and the standard first choice. Weight loss, where relevant, is one of the most powerful things a patient can do, and no operation replaces it.

Surgery has a real but selective role: for people who cannot tolerate CPAP, or who have a specific, correctable blockage.

When Surgery Helps — and Which Surgery

There is no single “snoring operation.” Surgery works only when it is matched to where the airway collapses:

  • Nasal surgery — correcting a deviated septum or nasal polyps where the block is in the nose
  • Removing enlarged tonsils — often the key step in children, and in some adults (see tonsils & adenoids)
  • Palate surgery — tightening or reducing bulky soft-palate tissue at the back of the throat

Matching the procedure to the site of obstruction is the whole point — the wrong operation in the wrong place helps no one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is snoring always sleep apnoea?

No. Many people snore without apnoea — that is simple snoring. The concern is snoring with witnessed pauses, gasping, and daytime sleepiness, which suggests obstructive sleep apnoea and needs assessment.

Do I need a sleep study first?

If apnoea is suspected, yes — it confirms whether you have it and how severe, which changes everything. We do not recommend snoring surgery without it.

Is surgery the first treatment for sleep apnoea?

Usually not. CPAP is the most effective first treatment for moderate-to-severe apnoea, along with weight loss. Surgery is for selected patients — those who cannot tolerate CPAP or have a correctable blockage.

What surgery is done?

It depends where the airway collapses — correcting nasal obstruction, removing enlarged tonsils, or reducing bulky soft-palate tissue. Matching the operation to the site is what makes it work.

Can weight loss cure it?

For many people carrying excess weight, losing it substantially improves or even resolves sleep apnoea. It is one of the most effective steps, and no surgery replaces it.
