Deviated Nasal Septum & Septoplasty in Delhi

A deviated nasal septum — a crooked internal partition of the nose — is one of the commonest reasons for a blocked nose that will not clear. When it genuinely obstructs your breathing, septoplasty corrects it through the nostrils, with no external cut and no change to the shape of your nose. But most deviated septums need no surgery at all, and we will tell you honestly which kind you have.

The septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that divides the nose into two passages. In almost everyone it is at least slightly off-centre. It only matters when it is deviated enough to block one or both passages — from birth, or after an injury to the nose.

• A persistently blocked nose — often worse on one side
• Difficulty breathing through the nose, especially when lying down
• Recurrent sinus infections, because the blocked side cannot drain
• Nosebleeds from the exposed, dried-out edge
• Snoring and disturbed sleep

This matters, because a crooked septum on a scan is not a reason to operate.

Almost everyone has some deviation and breathes perfectly well. Even where it does cause symptoms, a decongestant or steroid nasal spray, treatment of any underlying allergy, and time will settle many cases. Surgery is only for a deviation that genuinely obstructs your breathing and has not improved with proper medical treatment.

The deviated part of the septum is straightened or trimmed, working entirely through the nostrils — endoscopically, under general anaesthesia, as day-care surgery. There is no external incision, and the outward shape of the nose is unchanged.

Where the sinuses are also blocked, the surgeon may perform endoscopic sinus surgery at the same sitting; where the appearance of the nose is also to be corrected, it becomes a septorhinoplasty. Those are separate decisions we discuss with you beforehand.

Home the same day. Modern septoplasty usually avoids the old, uncomfortable nasal packing, using dissolvable material or soft splints instead. Expect a blocked, stuffy feeling for one to two weeks as the internal swelling settles — the clear improvement in breathing follows over the first month. Desk work in about a week.
