Ear Infections
Ear infections cause pain, a blocked feeling, reduced hearing and sometimes discharge. Most — especially in children — are caused by viruses or settle on their own within a few days.
See a doctor if the pain is severe or lasts more than a couple of days, there is discharge, hearing drops noticeably, or there is fever, or swelling and redness behind the ear. A young child who is very unwell should be reviewed promptly.
Sinus Infections (Sinusitis)
Sinusitis causes facial pain and pressure, a blocked nose, thick discharge and a reduced sense of smell. Acute sinusitis usually follows a cold and clears within two to three weeks — most of it viral, needing no antibiotics. Chronic sinusitis lasts twelve weeks or more and is a different problem, often driven by allergy or a blockage.
Antibiotics Are Not the Default
This is worth stating plainly, because it runs against habit.
Most ear and sinus infections do not need antibiotics. They are viral, or they resolve on their own, and an antibiotic changes nothing except adding side-effects and driving resistance. The right treatment for most is pain relief, decongestants, steam, saline rinses and a few days’ patience.
Antibiotics have their place — for infections that are clearly bacterial, severe, or not improving. But they are a considered decision, not a reflex.
When Surgery Is Considered
Surgery is never for a one-off infection. For the ear, a persistently discharging perforation may need tympanoplasty. For the sinuses, only chronic sinusitis that has failed a full course of proper medical treatment — steroid sprays, rinses and appropriate antibiotics — is considered for keyhole endoscopic sinus surgery to open the blocked drainage channels.

Why You Keep Getting Them
Recurring sinus infections usually have an underlying cause that is more useful to treat than each individual attack — an allergy, a deviated septum blocking drainage, or nasal polyps. Finding and treating that is what actually breaks the cycle. Repeated antibiotic courses do not.
