Urinary Incontinence Treatment in Delhi
Leaking urine is one of the commonest things women silently endure — and one of the most treatable. It is not simply a normal part of ageing or of having had children, and no woman should have to plan her life around toilets or give up exercise because of it. At Sama Hospital’s urogynaecology unit — in a NABH-accredited, doctor-owned hospital in South Delhi — most women are helped substantially without any surgery at all.
First: Which Kind of Incontinence?
Getting this right is the whole basis of treatment, because the two main types are treated completely differently:
Stress incontinence — leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh, lift or exercise, because the pelvic floor support has weakened.
Urge incontinence — a sudden, overwhelming need to go, with leakage before you reach the toilet, from an overactive bladder.
Many women have a mix of both. A simple bladder diary and assessment sort out which is which.
Treatment Starts Without Surgery
For most women, the first and often the only treatment needed is non-surgical.
- Pelvic floor physiotherapy — done properly, one of the most effective treatments for stress incontinence, and the recommended first step
- Bladder training — retraining an overactive bladder, highly effective for urge incontinence
- Lifestyle measures — weight, caffeine, fluid timing
- Medication — for urge incontinence that needs more than the above
Surgery is not the starting point, and for urge incontinence it is rarely the answer at all.
When Surgery Helps
For stress incontinence that has not responded to proper conservative treatment, a mid-urethral sling — a small day-care procedure that supports the urethra — is highly effective. It is considered after, not instead of, physiotherapy, and the options and their trade-offs are discussed with you fully before any decision.
You Do Not Have to Live With It
The saddest part of incontinence is how long women endure it in silence — avoiding travel, exercise and social life — when effective help was available all along. This is a medical condition, discussed with complete confidentiality by specialists who treat it every day. Raising it is the only hard part.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is leaking urine just normal after children or with age?
Common, but not something you simply have to live with. It is a treatable medical condition, and many women are helped substantially without any surgery.
Does it always need surgery?
No. First-line treatment is pelvic floor physiotherapy, bladder training and lifestyle measures, with medication for urge incontinence. Surgery is only for stress incontinence that has not responded to these.
Stress vs urge incontinence — what’s the difference?
Stress is leaking when you cough, laugh or exercise (weakened support). Urge is a sudden overwhelming need with leakage (overactive bladder). They are treated differently, and many women have both.
Do pelvic floor exercises really work?
Yes — done correctly and consistently they are one of the most effective treatments for stress incontinence. Guided physiotherapy makes a real difference over simply being told to do them.
Is the consultation private?
Yes — discussed with sensitivity and complete confidentiality by specialists who treat these conditions every day.
