Upper GI Endoscopy in Delhi

An upper GI endoscopy — also called a gastroscopy — lets your doctor look directly at the lining of your food pipe, stomach and the first part of the small intestine using a thin, flexible camera. It is one of the most useful tests in gastroenterology, because seeing the lining directly answers questions a scan or blood test often cannot. A gastroscope — a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end — is passed gently through the mouth. Your doctor examines the lining, can take painless biopsies (tiny tissue samples), and can treat certain problems in the same sitting, such as stopping a bleeding point or removing a small growth.

• Persistent heartburn or acid reflux
• Difficulty or pain when swallowing
• Ongoing upper-abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting
• Suspected ulcers, or investigation of bleeding or anaemia
• To check for coeliac disease or changes in the food-pipe lining

It is not usually painful. The throat is numbed with a spray and light sedation is generally offered, so you stay relaxed and often remember little of it. The test itself is short — frequently over in ten to fifteen minutes — and you go home the same day once any sedation wears off.

The key thing is an empty stomach: you’ll be asked not to eat for around six hours beforehand. We’ll tell you how to manage regular medicines — especially blood thinners and diabetes medication — and, because sedation is used, ask you to arrange for someone to accompany you home.
