Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) — mainly Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis — is a long-term condition in which the digestive tract becomes genuinely inflamed. It tends to flare and settle, and while it cannot yet be cured, it can be very well controlled. At Sama Hospital’s gastroenterology unit — a NABH-accredited, doctor-owned hospital in South Delhi — we diagnose IBD accurately and manage it over the long term, with the aim of keeping you well and in remission.
IBD is a group of conditions causing chronic inflammation of the gut. Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the digestive tract; ulcerative colitis affects the large bowel. Unlike the far more common irritable bowel syndrome, IBD involves real inflammation and damage that shows up on tests — which is why getting the diagnosis right matters.
Symptoms that include bleeding, weight loss or waking at night should always be assessed properly rather than assumed to be a “sensitive stomach.”
Diagnosis usually combines blood and stool tests with a colonoscopy, during which biopsies confirm inflammation, and sometimes imaging for parts of the gut a scope can’t reach. Colonoscopy is central both to making the diagnosis and to monitoring the disease over time.
IBD is managed with medication that reduces inflammation and keeps the disease in remission — from anti-inflammatory drugs to medicines that modify the immune response, chosen according to type and severity. The aim is to control flares, keep you well between them, and prevent complications. Most people do well on medication and regular monitoring; surgery is needed only in a minority. This is an ongoing partnership, with regular follow-up rather than a one-off fix.
It’s a common confusion worth clearing up. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) causes real symptoms but no inflammation or damage. IBD involves genuine inflammation visible on colonoscopy and can cause complications if untreated. That difference is exactly why persistent bowel symptoms deserve proper assessment.
IBD is a long-term condition managed over time rather than a one-off procedure. Costs depend on the investigations and medication your care needs; we explain them clearly, with cashless treatment available for eligible insurance patients. See our cost estimate page.
Doctor-owned, NABH-accredited, in South Delhi since 1982, with an experienced gastroenterologist named on this page. We diagnose IBD accurately and stay with you for the long term — because this is a condition managed over years, not a single appointment.

Usually blood and stool tests plus a colonoscopy with biopsies, and sometimes imaging. Colonoscopy is central to both diagnosis and ongoing monitoring.

Not yet — but with the right treatment most people achieve long periods of remission and lead full, normal lives. Regular follow-up keeps it well controlled.
