Diabetes is one of the common diseases found in people around the world. This disease cannot be cured completely but can be controlled. Diabetes is of 2 types and accordingly gets treated. Both types of diabetic patients can have normal life by just observing some precautions properly. Diabetes can be predicted easily by checking for the symptoms.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease caused due to high blood sugar level in the body. Increasing blood sugar (glucose) level majorly affects secretion of insulin. Insulin is responsible for maintaining blood sugar level. Insulin is actually a hormone produced by the pancreas. Generally, after taking food, blood sugar level of the body elevates, insulin is secreted by the pancreas to normalize the sugar level. Patients suffering from Diabetes have lack of insulin secretion, due to which their blood glucose level increases. Diabetes can be controlled, but lasts throughout a lifetime.
Different types of Diabetes:
Type 1 Diabetes
This type of diabetes is also known as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). In this type, pancreas experiences an autoimmune attack by the body itself. Due to the attack on the pancreas, it becomes incapable of making insulin. Patients suffering from Type 1 have to rely on insulin medication for survival.
Type 2 Diabetes
This type of diabetes is known as non-insulin dependent mellitus (NIDDM). In this type, patient’s body can produce insulin, but relatively in large amount than needed. This inappropriate secreting of insulin is caused due to lack of sensitivity to insulin by the cells of the body.
What are the Symptoms of Diabetes?
- Dehydration and increased thirst
At the early stages of Diabetes, the patient will face increased blood sugar level and a large amount of glucose can be found in his urine. When glucose is started moving out with urine, body gets dehydrated. Dehydration basically causes more water consumption and increased thirst.
- Storage of fats, proteins and carbohydrates
When pancreatic hormone named as Insulin is not properly secreted, influence adversely on the storage of fats, proteins and carbohydrates in the body.
- Weight loss
Diabetic patients undergo weight loss due to deficiency of insulin.
- Vomiting and nausea
Vomiting, fatigue and nausea are also some of the diabetic symptoms.
- Developing infections
Chances of developing infections of the skin, bladder and even in vaginal areas are increased in diabetic patients.
- Blurred vision
Increased glucose level also leads to blurred vision, which can be converted to lethargy later on, if the patient is not treated on time.
How is diabetes diagnosed?
One of the easiest ways to diagnose diabetes is fasting blood sugar level. When the person has fasted for at least 8 hours, is asked to give his blood sample for analysis. This analysis can be done in a doctor’s office with the help of glucose meter.
Treatment and care for Diabetes:
- Blood Glucose Testing:
This is one of the important steps for Diabetes Treatment. If the patient can manage to check blood sugar level regularly, then it would be easy to control. The patient should keep a regular check of the diabetes and if possible consult with the doctor if finds any change in the level.
- Medications for Diabetes:
Diabetes Treatment is different for both types. Type 1 patients should use insulin, whereas type 2 patients can manage their diabetes by healthy eating as prescribed by the doctor.
